RV Slide Out Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Slide-Out Issues Can be Avoided

RV Inspection Near Me

General Operation

Operating the slide-outs.
Only once the RV is levelled should the slide-outs be opened and closed.
Extending the slide-outs when not levelled can cause them to go out of alignment and square with the opening. Alignment issues cause various types of damage to the seals that often result in water leaks. Other harm can include higher friction/drag, putting high mechanical strain on the system and structure.

Owners are not inspecting seals often enough.
Seals around slide-outs deteriorate over time, allowing moisture through. Each time the slide-outs are moved extended, ensure the wiper seals are fully out, making contact with the slide-out walls and roof. Before closing the slides, ensure all debris is cleared off the slide roof. Regularly checking the health of your RV slide-out seals is also essential. We recommend checking in at the beginning and end of RV season (May-October) or if you live in your RV full time, check every few months. You want to check for cracks, tears, and any other potential problems that could lead to damage.

Stop using chemicals on your seals.
Contrary to the “Seal Protectants” marketing scheme, they do the opposite of “protection.” Seal protectants or coatings expose your seals to chemicals which reduces the efficiency and eventually leads to your seals drying out and cracking. While they sound important, you would just be depleting the life of your seal. Should you apply anything to your seals? That leads us to the final mistake to avoid.

Owners are not keeping the seals clean.
Just like anything else, you want to keep your seals clean. Even if your RV is stored inside or under a cover, dirt will find its way there. We recommend only using a mild automotive soap and water to clean your seals. It’s as simple as that! When cleaning, gently wipe down your seals, removing the dirt and grime, then patting the seals completely dry. Another tip is to use talcum powder in a sock to soak up any extra moisture.
